A Happy Mother's Day Health Fair and Pannel Discussion

One woman dies every 90 seconds from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth around the world. Here in the United States, more than two women die every day from maternal health-related issues. Approximately half of these deaths could be prevented if good-quality maternal health care were accessible, to all women across the USA.

In order to shine a light on the maternal mortality crisis in the United States and around ...the world, we are hosting a Happy Mother's Day Health Fair, followed by A Mother Lost Every 90 Seconds: Maternal Health Accountability Dialogue. The event will take place in the Englewood community of Chicago, identified as having the highest rate of maternal mortality in the city of Chicago.
The event will start with a health fair from 5-6:30 pm. The health fair will feature food, raffle prizes and information from community health and wellness providers for expecting mothers and their families. Following the health fair, from 6:30-8:00 pm, there will be a panel discussion featuring local experts on maternal health.
Please join us as we shine a light on maternal mortality!' on Wednesday, May 4 · 5:00pm - 8:00pm  at TEAM Englewood Community Academy High School. 6201 S. Stewart Avenue, Chicago, IL 60621.

Mother’s Day 2011: Shine a Light on Maternal Health!
Saturday, April 23, 2011 – Sunday, May 22, 2011

During the four weeks around Mother’s Day (May 8th), AIUSA will be continuing to highlight working for the right to maternal health in the United States and around the world.

We have four main tactics:

1. LETTER WRITING (In the form of Mother’s Day Cards)
In a twist on the traditional Amnesty letter, the Demand Dignity Campaign is producing six new Mother’s Day cards. Members will write the cards to their elected officials and international decision makers, using Write-a-thon style case sheets. Individuals and groups can register to host a card-writing event at www.amnestyusa.org/mothersday.

2. LOBBYING (In-District Lobby Week)
In March, Representative John Conyers (D-MI) introduced the Maternal Health Accountability Act, a bipartisan bill that addresses the most urgent recommendations of Deadly Delivery. From April 29 to May 8, members will lead delegations to lobby their representatives in-district to support the bill. Members can register at www. amnestyusa.org/lobby .

3.  FILM SCREENINGS (Documentaries)
No Woman, No Cry
Christy Turlington Burns’s new documentary on maternal health around the world and in the United States has its broadcast premiere on the Oprah Winfrey Network on Saturday, May 7, 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. Members can host a house party to watch the premiere by signing up at www.amnestyusa.org/mothersday.
Dead Mums (Moms) Don't Cry
The campaign team has copies of this powerful BBC documentary on international maternal mortality, to loan to members for screenings any time between April 23 and May 22. Register at www.amnestyusa.org/mothersday.

4.  EVENTS
The Demand Dignity Campaign is working with the Midwest and Southern Regions to stage events in Chicago and Houston – two key locations for our maternal health work.

Gaddafi’s Forces Are Carrying Out a Campaign of Disappearances Inside Libya to Crush Growing Opposition

Libyan forces loyal to Colonel Mu’ammar al-Gaddafi have carried out a campaign of enforced disappearances of government critics, writers, journalists, pro-democracy activists -- and even children -- to crush growing opposition to his rule, Amnesty International said today in a new briefing paper.

The report by an Amnesty International team inside Libya details more than 30 cases of individuals who have disappeared since before protests began, including political activists and those suspected of being rebel fighters or supporters of fighters.

The organization said there is every reason to believe, given the circumstances of the enforced disappearances, that these individuals are at serious risk of torture and ill-treatment. The documented cases are believed to represent only a small proportion of the total number of people who have been detained or have disappeared in the custody of Gaddafi’s forces in recent weeks.

The organization called for an immediate stop to this “outrageous” campaign in violation of international law. Malcolm Smart, director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa program, said: “It appears that there is a systematic policy to detain anyone suspected of opposition to Colonel al-Gaddafi’s rule, hold them incommunicado detention, and transfer them to his strongholds in western Libya.”

He warned that Colonel al-Gaddafi could be held responsible in an international court for any crimes committed by his forces during this conflict. “All those who are detained simply for peaceful activities in support of the protests must be released immediately and given safe passage home,” said Smart.

Amnesty International called on Colonel al-Gaddafi and those around him to allow immediate independent access to those detained in order to check on their safety and help protect them from torture, and to urgently inform their families of their whereabouts.

The organization also urged those holding detainees to ensure that all alleged or known fighters who are captured are treated humanely in line with international law, and to give them immediate access to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Amnesty International Accuses U.N. Security Council and African Union of Failing the People of Libya with ‘Half-Hearted’ Response as Violence Flares

Amnesty International today accused the international community of failing the people of Libya in their hour of greatest need as violence spirals and Colonel al-Gaddafi threatens to “cleanse Libya house by house”.

The organization said the response to the Libya crisis by the U.N. Security Council fell shamefully below what was needed to stop the spiralling violence , and called for concrete action, including an immediate arms embargo and assets freeze.

The U.N. Security Council on Tuesday issued a statement calling for an end to the violence and urging Libya to act with restraint and respect human rights, but took no substantive measures.
Amnesty International also criticized the African Union, which has not convened its Peace and Security Council to address the human rights crisis in Libya.

“Colonel al-Gaddafi has publicly made clear his readiness to kill those who oppose him in order to stay in power,” said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s Secretary-General. “This is unacceptable. Colonel al-Gaddafi and all those reporting to him need to know that they will be held personally accountable under international law for the crimes they commit.”

“His threats make the half-hearted response from the international community even more shocking. What Libyans need now is not mere words of concern but immediate, concrete action.”Amnesty International said that as a bare minimum the Security Council must impose an immediate arms embargo against Libya and an asset freeze against al-Gaddafi and his key security and military advisers.

The call came as Colonel al-Gaddafi gave a speech in which he called protesters “cockroaches” and “rats,” and compared the situation to China, saying that national unity had been “more important than the people of Tiananmen Square."Amnesty International also criticized the response of the African Union to the unfolding crisis, which has seen hundreds killed and persistent reports of mercenaries being brought in from African countries by the Libyan leader to violently suppress the protests against him.“

It is outrageous that the African Union Peace and Security Council has not even met to discuss the emergency taking place in one of its own member states,” said Salil Shetty. Amnesty International called on the African Union to ensure that its member states, particularly those bordering Libya, are not complicit in human rights abuses in Libya. The organization also urged the Arab League, which yesterday banned Libya from participation in its meetings, to act at once on its public commitments, in particular by launching an independent Arab investigative committee into the crisis in Libya.

In full, Amnesty International called on:·

The United Nations Security Council: to immediately impose an arms embargo on Libya preventing transfer of equipment and personnel, implement an asset freeze against Colonel al-Gaddafi and his senior military and security advisers and state unequivocally that crimes under international law in Libya will be investigated and punished.

The African Union and its member states: to immediately investigate reports that armed elements are being transported from African countries to Libya, acting to secure the land borders into Libya and monitor suspicious flights.·

The U.N. General Assembly: to immediately suspend Libya from the 47-member UN Human Rights Council.· The UN Human Rights Council: to deploy a fact-finding mission to Libya to make rapid recommendations on human rights abuses and whether a referral to the International Criminal Court is warranted.

Libya and neighboring countries: to facilitate the safe departure of those who wish to leave Libya.
